Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Edmonton focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists invest about ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in reality various podiatry training programs are contained inside these schools. After receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have obtained comprehensive health care instruction with an importance on problems regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to manage problems ranging from familiar disorders such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more obscure for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical training which supply them the practical experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those complications that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors additionally have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Foot doctor to design footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet typically encounter.
